(Interview) Συνέντευξη με τους She Past Away

she past awayΟι She Past Away, μας παραχώρησαν μία συνέντευξη για την αποψινή τους εμφάνιση στο Death Disco.

1. ABOUT THE PAST AND THE MAKING OF SPA

Not many people knows much about your musical background, your influences.
Tell us about the making of She Past Away and your early musical steps and life? What did you do before starting making music?

-We used to listen and play heavy metal and doom-death in the early 90s. I (Doruk) started listening bands like Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Dead Can Dance around the same time. Around 96-97, I discovered ‘First and Last and Always’ of The Sisters, ‘Pornography’ of The Cure and Joy Division all of which eventually became a turning point for me.

Which were the reasons that made you play this kind of music, in Turkey, nowadays.

-The music we listened to and got influenced by, was the main driving force for us to do what we are doing. We actually are not intimate with the music movement going on in Turkey. There are a few bands we like and appreciate but i can say that there is a tedious scene.

2. ABOUT LIFE IN TURKEY AND POLITICS

Does Turkey has a dark wave scene? Is it and was it hard for you? How does the audience reacts at your concerts?

-As I mentioned, there is no music scene we can feel related to over here. We cannot possibly speak of any Darkwave scene in Turkey. Indie Rock, Post Rock, and oriental influences are in demand.
We’ve done some good gigs in Turkey; however, I cannot say that we play to any conscious audience.

The political status in Turkey is very hostile for the youth. How do you feel about that?
What’s your view on what’s happening nowadays (with the closing of social networks like youtube, by the goverment, with the gezi park ect)

-Yes, Turkey is being governed very badly lately and we are going through tough times. Conservative religious mentality has occupied all the governmental power now. The number of people against this is also pretty huge and this leads to frequent uprisings.

3. ABOUT YOUR FIRST/SECOND ALBUM AND EUROPEAN TOUR

You have made your first full length album “Belirdi Gece”, released by the Greek label ‘Fabrika Records’ and ‘Dead Scarlet Records’,
and the last year you are touring all over Europe. Is that going well? Are you excited? What’s the impact you get from your European fans?

We read that you are preparing your second album. What can we expect? Is it in the same musical genre/aesthetic?
As more experienced and with all these that is happening in Turkey, is it your thoughts and influences changed your music?
Will the lyrics be in turkish as the first one?

-We are pretty happy to work with Fabrika Records and Dead Scarlet Records. Yes, we have been to many European cities this past year and it has been a really exciting experience. It is great to see that our music is recognized and listened to.

We are working on the new album and recording new material. There is not much of a change in the style. Influences of the music we enjoy lately may be felt. We reduced electro” elements. There is a more organic sound. However, our strong fellowship with Drum Machine is on full throttle and I can say that we are still under the influence of the Underground-Wave music of the 80s.

It feels natural and expressive to sing in mother language, but there is no harm in making a couple of songs in English in the future.

4.ABOUT MUSIC AND DARK WAVE SCENE

Do you listen to new bands/music? What kind of? Dark/cold/new wave (like your genre)? or different style also?
How do you see the future of the dark wave scene?

-Of course there are new bands we listen, cold wave band especially. My favourite is Lebanon Hanover. We like most of the bands under Fabrika Records in general. I think their selection is great. FJF, Automelodi, Xeno and Oaklander are among of the bands we like.

If we expand the area of definition from dark wave to underground wave, I could say that it is an untimely movement. The music of the 80s is unique and projects onto today’s music heavily, so i have no worries about its future.

5.ABOUT YOUR CONCERT IN GREECE AND DEATH DISCO

There are a lot of people here listening to dark wave, fancy your music, and expecting your live performance.
Do you have anything to say to them? What can they expect from you on the 3rd of May at Death Disco?

-We enjoy live shows very much and like that live sound. Shows usually last longer than an hour and we play 3-4 new songs in our concerts.

We are very excited about our first time in Greece. I hope it will be a good gig. Love to all who listen to and follow us! See you very soon.
